Mérite Jeunesse at LGL
What is it ?
Mérite Jeunesse is part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (known as DofE), which was founded in 1956 in the UK. Today young people aged 14 to 24 participate in 144 countries.
Why do it?
Mérite Jeunesse aims to help young people learn about themselves, discover new talents and practise commitment, communication, leadership, teamwork … Overcoming personal challenges, the participants grow in confidence while also becoming fitter and healthier.
How does it work?
Depending on the level (bronze, silver or gold), the involvement in activities lasts a minimum of six, twelve or eighteen months.
At each level, the participant is involved in four sections: Skills, Volunteering, Sport and Expedition. There is no competition. Each young person progresses at their own pace and at the level of their choice. At the gold level, there is also a residential project.
Mérite Jeunesse had well over 1000 participants in 2019 and 232 young people completed their award level in 2020.
The Lycée de Garçons de Luxembourg has had its own Mérite Jeunesse unit since 2012.
